Expanded Rosters for Fall 2023
Game Day Limits remain, but there's room to include more players in your squad
Beginning Fall 2023, SFYS is increasing the maximum number of players who can register for a team by two players for each division.
Note: the maximum number of players who can participate on Game Day remains the same.
For example: the registration limit for 2nd grade Recreational divisions is now 15 players, but the maximum number of players who can suit up on game day is still 13.
Click here for a summary of the new limits by division.
Why are we making this change, and why is the Game Day maximum staying the same even though I can roster more players in SQWAD?
- 7v7 Roster max now matches Microsoccer, so teams can easily transition into SF Youth Soccer, BUT
the Game Day maximum is set to ensure all players getting the opportunity to participate for at least 50% of game time
- We've also gotten feedback from teams whose players have conflicts and want to avoid forfeits, but attendance is a real issue
- the increase gives more flexibility for scheduling and avoiding forfeits since teams can expand the pool of players they can access for a given game
- particularly helpful for teams who aren't connected to a club, school, neigborhood who don't have easy access to a large guest player pool from other teams
How do we expect teams and referees to handle this change during the coming season?
We'll reassess at the end of the season, so please share any feedback and experiences with us. We have a few expectations and best practices for teams to give this the best chance of working to players' benefit; thank you all in advance for your continued support!
- We expect coaches/managers to make sure no more than the Game Day Maximum actually suit up, and in the event the full roster is available to attend, to have extra players to sit with spectators (we know they'd love to sit with the team–but please have them sit with spectators so the ref doesn't count extra players on your bench!)
- Game Day Violations = forfeits and coach suspensions

This seems like a thoughtful, pragmatic solution to a problem I've encountered multiple times as a coach- my school team's players' friends want to join our team specifically so they can play soccer with their friends, and I've had to tell them we don't have room on the official roster so there's no way for them to play with us, even as an occasional sub. THANK YOU!
