As a parent of four who all started out on independent parent coached rec teams, I found that as my kids got older it helped way more to have them either guest play in a game/tournament or attend a practice to see if the coaching was one that would help them futher their play and enjoyment of soccer. I won't say they didn't attend tryouts but that was never why we decided to move to a new team at whatever competative level.
